Earth Sheltered Homes

Posted by: admin

The Stonebrook Group in Western Massachusetts is about to embark on a project that is the first of it’s kind in the area! We have been contracted to finish an open ended dome. The dome is an earth sheltered home in Huntington Mass. When it comes to green building, one of the finest examples would be an earth sheltered home. This style of residential design uses passive annual heat storage(PAHS) as it’s primary heat source. In the summer months PAHS homes heat the earth around them. In the winter the heat collected in the earth penetrates back into the home subsequently acting as an insulator as well. Depending on the location and design, this style of home will reduce your heating bills by as much as 80%.
There are many other reasons to build an earth sheltered home:

  • Abundant natural lighting
  • A Comfortable environment that is warm in the winter and cool in the summer
  • ecologically sound
  • long lasting
  • low maintenance
  • less dust (due to the seamless construction the interior air quality is far better)
  • Insect and rodent resistant
  • Increased yard space (on top of the house)
  • decay and fire resistant
  • burglar resistant
  • tax incentives and insurance breaks

And much much more…

The cost of building an earth sheltered home is comparable to conventional building as an initial expense. However the long term savings are huge. With the implementation of other clean energy practices, it is possible to own a zero energy building.

In an effort to educate the public on the advantages of going green, The Stonebrook Group is taking the initiative to document the project as it progresses. What do you get with THe Stonebrook Group?

The Stonebrook Group is the number one source in Western Massachusetts to find energy efficient home components and contractors. We work closely with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The green movement has begun and in an effort to contribute to environmental awareness the Stonebrook Group offers contractors who are certified in green building and remodeling.

The common misconception is that green building is cost prohibitive. The truth is it can be very affordable, in fact in many cases the initial cost is less expensive, not to mention the long term savings you enjoy when owning an energy efficient home.

When considering new windows and doors in Western Mass. The Stonebrook Group offers a wide selection of products that are manufactured from renewable resources and recycled aluminum and glass as well as wood byproducts that don’t require additional deforestation.

What is a renewable resource?

A renewable resource is not necessarily recycled products but bi-products of managed resources. In other words, if a tree is cut down to fulfill a need for windows or doors, in return, at least one tree is planted in it’s place. The tree is the resource and it is being renewed. we call this managed forestry or sustainable harvesting practices. We offer our clients these options as well as many other environmentally correct resources such as;

➣Low or no VOC finishes and sealers
➣insulation of cellulose and foam-board that is 85% post consumer recycled
➣dual flush toilets that can save a family thousands of gallons of water each year
➣drywall that is 99% recycled from granite dust, sulfur dioxide, and recycled paper
➣Eco-friendly tiles that are made from recycled glass, granite dust and bottles.
➣Reclaimed and re-sawn lumber
➣highly energy efficient windows and doors
➣energy star rated appliances
➣solar options that include solar powered radiant heat

And so much more….
